Miami Family Photos for Holiday Cards: When Should You Book?

If you’re hoping to use new family photos for your holiday cards this year, you may be wondering: When should I book my family photo session?

For Miami families, October and November are two of the best months of the year for outdoor family photos. The weather begins to improve, the light is beautiful, and November in particular can bring some of the most comfortable conditions we have all year.

But there’s an important distinction between when you should have your photos taken and when you should book your session.

You absolutely can—and often should—schedule your family photos for November.

You just shouldn’t wait until November to book them.

When Should I Book Family Photos for Holiday Cards?

If you want family photos taken in October or November, I recommend getting your session on the calendar as early as possible.

Fall is one of the busiest times of year for family photographers in Miami, especially once families start thinking about holiday cards, gifts and updating the family photos around their homes.

Weekend dates are usually the first to fill, followed by the most desirable weekday sunset times.

Booking early doesn’t mean you need to take your holiday photos early. It simply gives you more choices.

If you know you’d love a November session, September or early October is the time to reserve it.

Is November Too Late for Holiday Card Photos?

Not at all.

In fact, November is one of my favorite months for family photography in Miami.

Temperatures are typically becoming more comfortable, humidity is improving, and outdoor sessions can start earlier in the afternoon after the time change. For families with young children, that earlier schedule can be a huge advantage.

The key is allowing enough time after your session to receive your finished photographs and order your holiday cards.

My typical turnaround time is approximately one to two weeks. After that, you’ll want to allow additional time to choose your holiday card design, place your order and have your cards printed and delivered.

A November session can work beautifully—you simply don’t want to be trying to find a photographer and an available date at the last minute.

October vs. November Family Photos in Miami

Both months are excellent choices, and there are advantages to each.

October sessions give you more breathing room before the holidays and tend to have later sunset times. It will still feel like Miami—warm and sometimes humid—but the weather generally begins transitioning away from the intense summer heat.

November sessions often bring more comfortable temperatures and earlier golden-hour sessions. They’re wonderful for families who want outdoor photographs without having to keep young children out as late in the evening.

There isn’t one “right” month.

For most families, the better question is: Which date works best for your family?

That’s another reason I encourage families to book early. The sooner your session is reserved, the more flexibility you’ll have to choose a date and time that works well with school schedules, activities, travel and younger children’s routines.

Should We Choose Sunrise or Sunset?

For outdoor family photography in Miami, the best light is generally around sunrise or during the golden hour before sunset.

For beach family sessions, I especially love sunrise. The beaches are typically quieter, the light is soft and beautiful, and we avoid the harsher midday sun.

For parks and other outdoor settings, late afternoon and golden hour are beautiful options.

But there’s another factor that matters just as much as the light: your children.

If you have a toddler who is normally exhausted by late afternoon, a beautiful sunset won’t help if they’re completely finished with the day. When planning a family session, I always consider the ages of the children and their normal schedules along with the location and available light.

The goal is beautiful light and happy kids.

What Happens if It Rains?

This is probably one of the biggest concerns families have when booking outdoor photos in Miami.

Our weather can be unpredictable, but that doesn’t mean you need to avoid booking an outdoor session.

I keep an eye on the forecast as the session approaches. Miami weather can change quickly, so I generally don’t make decisions based on a forecast several days in advance. If the weather truly isn’t going to cooperate, we’ll discuss our options and reschedule as needed.

It’s another reason booking ahead is helpful. Having your session planned well before you actually need your holiday cards gives us some flexibility if Mother Nature decides not to cooperate.

How Much Time Should I Allow for Holiday Cards?

Working backward from when you’d like to mail your cards is the easiest way to plan.

You’ll need time for:

  • Your family photography session
  • Editing and delivery of your finished images
  • Choosing your favorite photographs
  • Designing and ordering your cards
  • Printing and shipping
  • Addressing and mailing them

My finished images are typically ready within one to two weeks after your session.

If you’re hoping to send your cards in early December, an October or November photography session can work very well. The important part is having your session reserved ahead of time so you aren’t scrambling for an available date later.

When Should I Reserve My Miami Family Photography Session?

If you’re reading this in September or early October and thinking, I have plenty of time—we want to take our pictures in November, you’re right.

You have plenty of time to take them.

But now is the time to book them.

Fall calendars fill quickly, particularly weekends and the most popular session times. Reserving your session now means you’ll have a better chance of getting the date that works best for your family while still enjoying everything that makes October and November such wonderful months for family photography in Miami.
