When Is the Best Time of Year for Family Photos in Miami?

One of the questions I hear most often as we head into fall is, “When is the best time to schedule family photos in Miami?”

Fall in Miami looks a little different than it does in most parts of the country. September may technically mark the beginning of fall, but here it can still feel very much like summer. Temperatures stay warm, afternoon rain is common, and that more comfortable “fall feeling” usually arrives much later.

For families hoping to update their portraits for holiday cards, gifts, or simply because it has been too long since everyone was in front of the camera together, October and November are two of my favorite months for outdoor family photos in Miami.

But each fall month has its advantages. Here’s what I recommend considering when choosing the best time for your family.

September Family Photos in Miami: Beautiful, But Still Summer

September can be a beautiful month for family photos, but in Miami, it still feels like summer.

Heat and humidity remain high, and rain is an important consideration. According to National Weather Service climatological data, Miami has about a 42% daytime probability of precipitation in September.

That doesn’t mean 42% of photo sessions will be rained out. Miami weather can be incredibly localized, and a forecast showing rain may mean a quick afternoon shower—or rain several miles away from where we’re photographing.

It’s one of the reasons I don’t make weather decisions too far in advance. I watch conditions carefully as we get closer to the session and make the call based on what’s actually happening.

If you choose September for outdoor family photos, timing is especially important. I avoid the hottest part of the afternoon and schedule around the best light, which also makes the experience much more comfortable for babies and young children.

If heat and unpredictable weather are concerns, September can also be a great month to consider a studio session.

October Family Photos in Miami: The Transition Month

October is when we usually begin to see a shift.

It’s still warm—this is Miami, after all—but conditions generally start moving in the right direction. The climatological daytime probability of precipitation drops from 42% in September to approximately 31% in October.

For me, October marks the beginning of prime family-photo season.

Outdoor sessions become increasingly comfortable, especially later in the month, and families still have plenty of time to receive their finished photographs for holiday cards and gifts.

It’s also when my calendar gets considerably busier.

If you’re hoping for an October family session and need a weekend, I recommend reserving your date in advance. You don’t need to have every detail figured out when you book. We can decide on the location, clothing, and other details as your session gets closer.

Not sure where you’d like to go? I’ve put together a separate guide to the best locations for fall family photos in Miami.

November Family Photos in Miami: Prime Outdoor Season

If I had to choose one of my favorite months for outdoor family photography in Miami, November would be high on the list.

A family of four, dressed in light-colored clothes, walks hand in hand outdoors under large trees with hanging moss on a sunny day—capturing the best time for family photos in Miami.

By November, Miami’s climatological daytime probability of precipitation drops to approximately 19%. Conditions are generally more comfortable, humidity begins to ease, and spending an hour outside with young children tends to be much more pleasant than it is earlier in the fall.

The catch?

Everyone else wants November, too.

November is one of my busiest months for family photography because families are thinking about holiday cards, gifts, and finally updating the photographs hanging in their homes.

If you know you want a November session—especially on a weekend—I recommend getting on the calendar before November arrives.

Waiting for the weather to get beautiful before booking often means waiting too long.

How the November Time Change Affects Family Photos

There’s another important difference between October and November that families don’t always think about: Daylight Saving Time ends in early November.

Before the clocks change, outdoor sessions need to happen later in the afternoon because of the position and intensity of the sun. Once the clocks change, sunset suddenly happens much earlier, which means our sessions also need to begin earlier.

This can be particularly important for families trying to work around school schedules, naps, after-school activities, or work.

It’s one of the reasons I always help my clients determine the best start time rather than asking them to choose one themselves. Beautiful light makes an enormous difference in your final photographs.

Sunrise or Sunset for Miami Family Photos?

The best time of day depends largely on the location you choose.

For most park and garden locations, I prefer photographing families in the late afternoon leading into golden hour. As the sun gets lower, the light becomes softer and warmer without the harsh shadows we get during the middle of the day.

The beach is different.

For Miami family beach photography, I generally prefer morning sessions, often at or around sunrise. Temperatures are cooler, the beaches tend to be less crowded, and the morning light works beautifully with the ocean as our backdrop.

For families with young children who are naturally early risers, morning beach sessions can work surprisingly well. Children are often much happier earlier in the day than they are at the end of a long afternoon.

If you’re trying to decide between the beach, Matheson Hammock, Vizcaya, or another setting, my guide to Miami’s best fall family photo locations goes into much more detail about which setting may work best for your family.

What Happens If It Rains?

This is probably the biggest concern families have about booking an outdoor photo session in Miami.

My advice is simple: don’t spend the week before your session obsessively checking your weather app.

South Florida weather changes constantly.

I monitor the weather as your session approaches, and if conditions truly aren’t workable, we’ll reschedule. I don’t make weather calls several days ahead simply because there’s a rain icon in the forecast.

Clouds aren’t necessarily a bad thing, either. An overcast sky can give us beautiful, soft, even light and sometimes we can be blessed with a rainbow. What matters is whether the actual conditions allow us to photograph comfortably and safely.

After more than 15 years of photographing families in Miami, I’ve learned not to panic over a forecast several days ahead.

A woman, man, and child walk toward the ocean holding hands, with a rainbow visible in the cloudy sky over the water—capturing a magical moment that highlights the best time for family photos in Miami.

Studio or Outdoor Family Photos?

If you don’t want to worry about Miami heat or rain at all, a studio session may be a better fit.

The studio gives us complete control over the environment—no heat, humidity, rain, wind, or changing light. It also creates a clean, timeless look that keeps the attention completely on your family.

Outdoor sessions offer something different: more movement, more variety, and an opportunity to incorporate the beautiful scenery that makes Miami special.

For families with active young children, I often love being outdoors because the kids can move, explore, and play rather than feeling as though they have to stand still and pose.

Neither option is better. It really comes down to how you want your family photographs to feel.

Where Should You Take Your Fall Family Photos?

Once you’ve decided when to schedule your session, the next question is usually where.

Rather than repeating all of those options here, take a look at my Best Locations for Fall Family Photos in Miami guide. I compare some of my favorite Miami locations and explain which settings tend to work best for different families.

If you’re drawn to something more elegant and architectural, you can also see a real family photography session at Vizcaya.

So, What Is the Best Month for Family Photos in Miami?

If comfortable outdoor weather is your priority, late October through November is one of my favorite times for fall family photos in Miami.

September is absolutely possible, but you’ll need to be prepared for more heat, humidity, and unpredictable weather.

October is the transition month, with improving conditions and a little more flexibility.

November typically gives us the most comfortable outdoor experience of the three—but it’s also one of the most popular times of year.

The biggest mistake I see families make isn’t choosing the wrong month.

A man, woman, and young girl walk hand in hand on a sunlit garden path surrounded by palm trees and greenery, capturing the warmth and beauty that makes this scene the best time for family photos in Miami.

It’s waiting for the perfect weather before they book.

By the time Miami finally starts feeling beautiful outside, many of the most desirable weekend dates have already been reserved.

You don’t need to know the perfect location before getting on my calendar. Once your date is reserved, I can help you choose between the studio, a park, Vizcaya, or the beach based on the ages of your children, the look you want, and what will realistically work best for your family.

After more than 15 years of photographing families in Miami, I’ve learned there isn’t one perfect formula. The best sessions happen when we choose the right time and environment for your particular family.
