Fall is one of my favorite times of year for fall family photos in Miami. While we may not get changing leaves and sweater weather, fall brings slightly cooler temperatures, beautiful light, and the perfect opportunity to update your family photos before the holidays. Still deciding when to schedule? Read my guide to the best time for family photos in Miami: https://stephanieanders.com/when-is-the-best-time-of-year-for-family-photos-in-miami/
It’s also one of the busiest times of year for family photography, so if you’re thinking about a fall session, it’s a good idea to get on the calendar early.
One of the first decisions we’ll make when planning your session is where to take your photos. Miami gives us so many beautiful options, and the location you choose can completely change the look and feel of your images.
Below are three of my favorite locations.

Matheson Hammock Park: Natural, Relaxed and Perfect for Kids

Matheson Hammock Park is one of my go-to locations for family photos, especially for families with younger children.
The large trees, winding paths and natural greenery give us plenty of variety without having to walk very far. The shade is also a huge advantage in Miami, where even our fall afternoons can still be warm.
I especially love Matheson for families with active toddlers and young children. Instead of expecting little ones to stand still and pose, we can let them explore, walk, play and interact with their parents. Those in-between moments often become some of my favorite photographs.
The park also gives us several different looks within one session. We can photograph among the trees and greenery and then incorporate the waterfront for a completely different backdrop.
Best for: Families with young children, larger families, and anyone who wants natural, relaxed family photos with lots of greenery.
Vizcaya: Timeless and Elegant

For a more polished and sophisticated look, it’s hard to beat Vizcaya Museum & Gardens.
The formal gardens, stone staircases, fountains, architecture and waterfront terraces create an incredible variety of backgrounds. It’s a beautiful choice if you want your family portraits to feel a little more elevated while still keeping the interactions between your family natural.
Vizcaya works especially well with dressier wardrobe choices and neutral or classic colors. Because there are so many beautiful areas throughout the gardens, we can create a gallery that feels varied without ever leaving the property.
One thing to keep in mind is that Vizcaya requires a photography permit for professional portrait sessions, so this location does come with an additional fee. I also generally prefer weekdays when possible. Weekends can be much busier, while a weekday session gives us a little more freedom to move around the gardens.
For families looking for a timeless setting for fall family photos in Miami, Vizcaya is one of my favorite choices.
Best for: Families who want an elegant, timeless look and don’t mind investing a little more in the location.
The Beach: Classic Miami and Beautiful at Sunrise

You really can’t talk about Miami family photography without including the beach. Miami Beach gives us a completely different look from Matheson or Vizcaya.
A beach session is light, airy and relaxed, with soft sand, ocean and open sky creating a simple backdrop that keeps the focus on your family.
For family sessions, I strongly prefer photographing at sunrise. The light is beautiful, temperatures are cooler and the beaches are typically much quieter than later in the day. This is especially important during the busy fall season.
Sunrise also works surprisingly well for families with young children, who are often at their happiest earlier in the day. And because there’s plenty of room to move, beach sessions are perfect for walking, running, playing with the kids and creating images that feel natural rather than overly posed.
Wardrobe can be as casual or elevated as you’d like. Soft neutrals, blues, creams and muted colors photograph beautifully against the sand and water.
Best for: Families who love a light, natural, quintessentially Miami look and don’t mind an early start.
Choosing the Best Location for Fall Family Photos in Miami
There really isn’t one “best” location. I usually recommend choosing based on your children’s ages, your family’s personality, the style of clothing you envision and how you want the finished photographs to feel.
If you have energetic young children and want something easygoing and natural, Matheson Hammock is often my first choice.
If you love a more refined, classic look, Vizcaya is beautiful.
And if you want something relaxed, bright and unmistakably Miami, choose the beach.
Not sure? That’s part of what I help with when we plan your session. We can talk about your family, wardrobe and the overall look you’re drawn to, and I can recommend the location that will photograph best.
Book Your Fall Family Session Early
Fall is always one of my busiest seasons for fall family photos in Miami, particularly as we get closer to Thanksgiving and the holidays. Weekend dates tend to fill first, so I recommend reaching out early if you have a specific date in mind.
Whether we meet under the trees at Matheson Hammock, among the gardens at Vizcaya, or on the beach at sunrise, the goal is the same: to create beautiful photographs of your family as you are right now.
Because the kids don’t stay this little for long.
